NEWS
04.16.08 Good New
Now you KNOW this must be serious if I am writing EARLY in the a.m., but first, HAPPY HUMP DAY, YA’LL!!!!!!!
I hope you are all doing well- I also hope the sun is shining wherever you dwellJ.
We have a lot to cover, so for the second week in a row, wish me luck at being quick and conciseJ. As you know, this Saturday, 4/19, we will open for Nicolay at the best spot in Baltimore to hear Hip Hop music, The New Turntable Club. Tickets are only $7.00 in advance/$12.00 at the door (we still have a few more), so call me today if you plan on coming. The show starts at 9:30, so get there early to reserve a good spot.
Now to The Other Side… Loyola College (and Wendel Patrick) will play host to Session Two of this series next Thursday, 4/24. Doors open here at 8:30 & the show begins 9:00. Tickets are $10.00 and available on line at www.salimmusic.com (News Page) or www.salimandthemusiclovers.com (Main Page). Loyola students, they already took the cost of this show out of this semester’s tuition, so you get in FREEJ. We once again promise that this show will be an EXPERIENCE, so be sure to be there!
And last, but so not least, the band will open for the Blast Master himself, KRS-1 on 5/22 at Club Sonar in Baltimore!! Words cannot adequately express my appreciation for the bar that KRS has set—when I think of Hip Hop, I think of KRS. We want to sell this show out—not to boost our numbers, but because as fans of GOOD MUSIC, Mr. Parker is our version of Hip Hop royalty—that alone should make us want to come out and support. Unfortunately, most clubs and radio stations only listen to numbers and not quality—we could speak volumes that in the new world of snap, the Bronx native is still relevant. Whew, off of my soap box- tickets are $18.00, BUT if you purchase them from us at a show, you can cop them for $15.00. You will have three opportunities to take advantage of this deal: this weekend at the Nicolay show, on The Other Side at Loyola on 4/24, and at Joe Squared on 5/3. Call me soon to reserve your spot.
All right Good People (I don’t think I did well at being quick, but don’t you agree this was good news?), until the next time, THANK YOU for your ongoing love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to help us spread the word!
04.10.08 What's the 411?
Happy Hump Day Ya’ll!!
I hope you all had a chance to go out and enjoy the SUN today (at least if you are in the Baltimore/DC areaJ)! Before we get to the business, I must thank everyone who chimed in so far on the message board. Interestingly enough, many are you are serious about your definition of what constitutes a remix. Remember, this is all in Hip Hop fun, so no beefs over favorite five listsJ. If you have not joined the conversation, consider this another invitation—we would love to hear from you.
Ok, we have lots to talk about, so I will try to be as concise as possible (wish me luck). First up is the Nicolay show at Turntable next Saturday April 19. Tickets are only $7.00 in advance/$12.00 at the door. This show should seriously sell out (plus we only have ten tickets left), so contact me soon if you plan on coming. Nicolay’s debut CD, Foreign Exchange is a favorite in our household, so we are excited and humbled to share the stage.
Now to The Other Side (session two, that is)… the show received so much love the first time, we (the band & Wendel Patrick) are looking forward to creating the next EXPERIENCE in Loyola’s McGuire Hall on Thursday April 24. Tickets are $10.00 (no worries Loyola students… you get in free), and can be purchased beginning Friday online at www.salimmusic.com (Music Page) or www.salimandthemusiclovers.com (on the Main page). If on line shopping/paypal is not your cup of tea, give me a call, and someone from our street team will give you car-to-door service (big smile).
How was that (I hope you are all singing my praises)? All right good people, until next time, THANKS for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to help us spread the word!
04.03.08 Shut 'Em Down (The Remix)
I am a little achy and sleepy, but when Salim offered to write to you, I suddenly felt just a little betterJ.
We have a few things to take care of, so I will get down to the business. Remember you can see the band this weekend at the first annual Terms of Art festival. Sponsored by the Black Law Students Association at the University of Maryland School of Law, the festival aims to network & showcase musicians, dancers, painters, poets, and photographers. Admission is $3.00 for students/$5.00 for everyone else. The school is located at 500 W. Baltimore Street in the City… we look forward to seeing you there.
We also perform on April 19 at the Turntable Club with Nicolay. Tickets for this event are $12.00 (yes, you can stop by Starbucks and purchase tickets from Topix) and will probably sell out, so contact me soon to reserve yours.
Finally (for the business, that is), the much anticipated The Other Side: Session 2 is on April 24 at Loyola. Tickets are FREE for Loyola students, and $10.00 for the rest of us (I hope you still have your old ID Petey). Salim & The Music Lovers + Wendel Patrick… now that is a show worth EXPERIENCING! Beginning Friday, you will have the choice of receiving door-to-door ticket service, or going on line via www.salimmusic.com to purchase tickets.
Ok, now that the business is done, as promised, today we will begin a new topic for the message board. Thanks to everyone who sent in topics for consideration—in the end, listing your five favorite hip-hop remixes of all time won out. Per the subject line, one of my favorite remix is PE’s classic “Shut Em’ Down.” I know I am dating myself, but I was in college when this dropped, and every time this song came on, I spiraled into a hypnotic trance… whoo hoo, just thinking about Atlanta gets me excited! Ok, I digress… at any rate, go to www.salimmusic.com and check out the rest of my list (and Salim’s) when you get a chance. Please post your top five (in no particular order) so we have plenty to discussJ.
All right good people, as always, THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to help us spread the word!
03.27.08 Guess Who's Back???
HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
Yes, I am backJ. Let me apologize for brother Salim’s novel last week… I tried to stop him, but I was too sick to be effective (lol). Thanks for all the well wishes you sent my way… I knew you all loved me (big smile).
Ok, before we get down to business, I must say WELCOME to the folks who joined the MOVEMENT this weekend. Salim and I were in the Magic City (Florence, South Carolina that is) eating good food and spending quality time with family. While we were there, lots of folks heard the music, loved the vibe, and signed on. I made a promise to take great care of them, so help me keep my wordJ.
Now to the business—please mark your calendars for the following shows in April: April 5, University of Maryland School of Law (first annual Terms of Art Festival), April 19, Turntable Club w/ Nicolay (dope producer from the Netherlands), and April 24 at Loyola for The Other Side: Session 2. Wow, I even feel as though that is a lot! As always, you know I will keep posted on the details, but a quick synopsis is the University of Maryland gig is sponsored by the Black Law Students Association in an effort to bring diversity to the campus, so if you want to network and hear good music, this is the gig for you. The Turntable Club is a gig for Hip Hop purist—Nicolay brought us the groundbreaking CD, Foreign Exchange a few years back. The project was headed by two members of Little Brother, so it gained quite a bit of buzz. At any rate, this gig calls for everyone who pop-locked at least once in their lifetime to be front and center. Loyola will play host to the much-anticipated The Other Side: Session 2. This gig is honestly for everyone (unless you are at the point in your life where partying on a college campus scares you)… if you missed the first session, you should be the first in line to get a ticketJ. Again, I know that was plenty, but I wanted to give you the cliff notes version of what to expect from each venue—at the end of the day, I believe you should treat yourself and come to all three (I am laughing, but serious).
Al right good people, as always, THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to help us spread the word!
03.20.08 Yours Truly (The Remix)
HAPPY HUMP DAY GOOD PEOPLE!!!
This message comes via yours truly…Salim. Yes, it is I. I apologize for the
lateness, but we got home from the hospital late so cut me some slack J.
Natashia is feeling a little under the weather so she handed over the reins
to me. I have taken control of the Hump Day train and refuse to relinquish
my grasp. I am power tripping. I control the message that thousands—ok maybe
hundreds (but we’re getting close)—will receive. This is my opportunity to
take this blank slate and create a mosaic of language that will be heralded
in the heavens-
(5 minutes later)
Ok, Natashia came downstairs to check in on me. For some reason she
disagreed with where the email was heading, so I decided to change
direction. I will follow the guidelines that she has set for me, but I want
my dissension to be noted.
Anyway, let’s get onto the news. Remember to mark your calendars because The
Other Side: Session II is coming up on April 24th. Tickets will be available
soon on our website. We will also be doing the Domino’s Pizza thing—you know
about the front door delivery service. As a side note, I like lasagna and
quiche, so making one of those dishes might speed the delivery of your
ticket-
(3 minutes later)
Ok, nix the lasagna/quiche thing. I have just been informed by a certain
someone—who’s name begins with an “N”—that I cannot take advantage of the
mailing list by accepting bribes. Some people are just too sensitive.
Last thing. We have been kicking around the next topic for the forum
discussion. Actually, the topic that we are looking at was submitted by
you—the collective you of course. We will unveil it next week. Although we
think we have a great topic, we want to give you all another chance to send
in some more ideas. We can be swayed and hopefully there’s another idea out
there that can do it.
Time for me to sign out, but before I do I just want to personally thank
you. Your kind words, hands waving in the air, myspace comments, email
messages, and warm embraces continue to fuel and inspire me. I am humbled by
your outpourings of affection and I hope I make you proud of your decision
to invest in this movement.
All right good people, until Natashia relinquishes her power again, THANK
YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to
help us spread the word!
03.12.08 Who's Got Next?
Yes, it’s late, but it’s still HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
Please forgive my tardiness today. I worked 14 hours yesterday and today, so I am feeling a little special right nowJ.
Speaking of special (I know, but you knew it was coming), the vibe, energy, and crowd were just that at Saturday’s Creative Alliance show. Let me back up and mind my manners to say WELCOME to all the folks that joined our MOVEMENT this weekend. Since we are all fans of MUSIC in this space, we promise to take great care of youJ. Ok, now back to the show (smile)… I am almost embarrassed to say it was my first time at Creative Alliance. It is such a great spot for ART in the City, that I should have found my way there before. Anyway, I was so appreciative of the giving spirit that encompassed the evening. Femi, of the 5thl set the tone, Shane Perez gave of his time and money to make the show possible, and the ARTISTS rocked the stage and blessed the audience with words and beats that still flow in my head. We were all so inspired; we know next month’s gig will reap the benefits of all the creativity sparked from Saturday (yeah!).
So, who’s got next? Loyola’s got next (smile). Back by popular demand, the band, and Wendel Patrick, will showcase their EXPERIENCES on The Other Side: Session 2 on April 24th. Please mark your calendars and plan to get there early. Loyola students get in free, and the rest of us have to contribute $10.00. You know I will keep you informed, so no need to fretJ.
Al right good people, until we meet again, THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to help us spread the word!
03.05.08 Sign of the Times
Good Early Morning… oh, and HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
I am trying to improve on the time of day we hump, so I figured receiving your mail before 9:00 a.m. would be a good start (smile).
Before we get down to business, I must say THANK YOU to everyone who recently purchased Hip Hop Revisited. Because of your support, our CD’s have sold out again at Sound Garden and CD Baby. We will re-up by the end of the week, but I wanted you to know that your dollars speak volumes to your demand to hear GOOD MUSIC! If you or someone you know wants the CD before this weekend, you can still order from www.salimmusic.com or visit Brother Bill at Jazz WestJ.
Ok, as you know, the band’s next performance will be this Saturday, March 8 at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore. This show is billed (and aptly named) Signs Of The Times. The sub title, Music that Matters, may be an even greater indicator of the ARTISTS you will hear that evening. Per our last conversation (or humpin’, if you will), The Creative Alliance brings together artists and audiences to experience the wealth of talent in the Baltimore/DC area. This will be a show you can invite your grandmother to (lol), so we encourage you to be town criers and tell everyone you know to meet us in East Baltimore on Saturday night (if you scared, say you scared). The flyer attached will give you all pertinent information… if you have more questions, please call me, or visit www.creativealliance.org.
All right good people… until the next time, THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to help us spread the word!
02.28.08 The Creative Alliance
I know, I know… but it is STILL HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
My day was BANANAS, so I should go to sleep very soon, but I just had to check inJ.
Ok, so during our last humpin’, I told you to save March 8th as a date to come rock with the Music Lovers. Since that time, I have done some research on The Creative Alliance. Founded in 1995, The Creative Alliance seeks to bring together ARTISTS and audiences from diverse backgrounds to experience all forms of ART. Wow, that was a mouthful, right? Honestly, I heard about Creative Alliance, but I was unaware of the depth and magnitude of services and outreach that happens thru their doors. I also knew our good friend, Femi of the famed 5thl, was somehow associated with them, so that was a plusJ. In all seriousness, I mention this only as another example of the Arts Community that indeed exists in Baltimore. I know we (ok, I) often express concern (nice way to put it) over the absence of true networking in the City. I look forward to uncovering another jewel/hub of the City. If you plan on joining us, tickets can be purchased at the door for $10.00. The doors open at 7:30, and the show begins at 8:00. If you need more information, hit me up, or check out www.creativealliance.org. Actually, check out the website anyway… GOOD ART is waiting on youJ.
Alright good people (was that better JJ?), until next time, THANKS for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to help us spread the word!
02.21.08 What's Coming Up?
I know it’s nighttime, but it’s still HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
Yes, I am wrong for checking in so late, but just focus on how early I got the last edition to you (smile).
Before I go any further, I must mind my manners and say WELCOME to all the folks who joined the MOVEMENT at Turntable on Saturday. We promise to take real good care of youJ.
Speaking of Turntable, I must give a quick shout out to the Carter family—they have transformed the (New) Turntable club into a spot that supports independent artists, nurtures homegrown talent, and provides a space for GOOD MUSIC.
Ok, so what’s coming up? The next gig will find the band at the Creative Alliance at the Patterson in Baltimore on 3/8/08. This will be the band’s first performance there, so we need your help to be sure THE ALLIANCE is aware of THE MOVEMENT (hope you’re smiling). As I get more details, I will pass them on to you, but save the date!
Alright good people (that was short, right?), as always, THANKS for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC!! Please continue to help us spread the word
02.13.08 Live @ Turntable
It is EARLY Wednesday, so HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
Now you know I must be on my grind if you get a Hump Day email this early (lol).
Before we talk business, I have to say thanks so much to everyone who sent text messages, emailed, or called to offer good wishes for the band’s debut radio appearance on 89.7 Monday evening. You are truly the backbone of this MOVEMENT, so thanks again for keeping our machine moving!
Now down to business, as you know, the band is performing this Saturday at the New Turntable Club—details are below:
Where: 2139 E. Jefferson Street 21205
When: 2/16/07
Time: Doors open at 9:00
Loot: $7 in advance, $10 at the door
Salim and I will do our last ticket runs on Friday, so hit me up soon if you plan on coming. Big shout out to the Turntable family for supporting independent music!
Alright good people, until Saturday (smile), THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to help us spread the word!
02.07.08 Seen-n-Heard
I KNOW it’s nighttime, but HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
I had an eight hour training in Harford County today, so please excuse my tardiness :0)
Before we get down to business, I must say thanks for the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the band’s new website… we happen to agree that it ROCKS!
Ok, mark your calendars to remind you to tune into Towson University’s 89.7 fm on Monday, 2/11 from 8-9 p.m. You will hear the band’s live recording & interview with Sun paper reporter, Sam Sessa. This is the band’s debut radio appearance—we fully expect more good things to comeJ.
Speaking of good things (yeah, you knew that was coming), the band will perform on Saturday, 2/16 at the New Turntable club in Baltimore. Tickets are $7.00 in advance ($12.00 at the door)—Salim and I are doing ticket runs this weekend, so hit me up to reserve yours!
All right good people… until the next time, THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC. Please continue to help us spread the word!
01.31.08 It's Official!
I know it’s nighttime, but I can still wish you a HAPPY HUMP DAY, YA’LL!!
If you are receiving this email from the region known as B-More, then you will understand how COLD I am right now. The band and I just got in from their live recording at Towson State’s WTMD (yeah!!). Mark your calendars, because you can hear that session on Monday 2/11/08 @ 8 p.m. To compound my challenge of getting this Hump Day to you at a reasonable time was a small organization named BGE… because of the high winds, the power has been off in our neighborhood all day, so I am just happy that we are back to business as usual, and can get some last minute Humpin’ in (smile).
Ok, speaking of business as usual, I want to remind you that the band’s next performance is at the New Turntable Club in Baltimore on 2/16/08. Rocking the stage for their Seen-n-Heard series, the band will make their 08’ debut when the doors open at 8:30. Tickets are only $7.00 (wow!) in advance (12 bones at the door), so hit me up soon to reserve yours.
Now to the subject line—as you know, Salim’s website has been up and operating for some time now. Well, our business team thought it was past the time for the BAND to have a website, so (drum roll please…) check out www.salimandthemusiclovers.com as soon as you can. Big shout out (and lots of love) to Maggie Walsh of W3 Promotions—even being in London did not stop her from delivering quality, on time services, at a reasonable rate. You can find her link, on the CONNECT page—please scoop her up before she realizes how much she is worthJ.
All right good people, and until the next time, THANK YOU for your ongoing love & support of GOOD MUSIC. Please continue to help us spread the word!!
01.23.08 Baltimore Unsigned
Even though it’s nighttime, it’s still HUMP DAY, YA’LL!!
Thanks so much for all the well wishes I got via email, and yes, I am feeling betterJ.
Ok, so the last email gave you a head’s up on upcoming shows for the band. This email will give you one more date to look forward to (smile). The good folks at Towson’s radio station, WTMD/Baltimore Unsigned, have invited the band to come in January 30 to tape a live session in the studio. As many of you may remember, Salim & Wendel Patrick did a spot for the radio last year (big ups to those two, because that show was voted in the top ten for ‘best shows’ in 07’ by radio listeners)—this time, the band will have an opportunity to share their story and music. Keep your ears open for the date the show airs.
On a different note, Salim and I have gotten tons of feedback for the new forum on www.salimmusic.com (especially the top five emcees debate…you can still weigh in). At any rate, and since the conversations have been so lively (yes, that’s a good word), we have decided to introduce a new topic each month. For this month’s topic, we would love to get your feedback for ideas on what is on your mind, so please send me suggestions—I promise, if we choose your topic, I will give you some credit (lol).
Alright good people, until next time, THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to help us spread the word!
01.17.08 Gigs Galore!
Happy Hump Day, Ya’ll!!
I hope you are all doing well—I am a bit under the weather, so this email will be short and sweet (famous last words, huh?).
Per the subject line, get out your planners, calendars, PDA’s (ok, you get the idea) to save the following dates:
-2/16/08 Seen-n-Heard Series at the New Turntable Club in Baltimore (www.myspace.com/turntableclub). Tickets are only $7.00 in advance/$12.00 at the door.
-3/27/08 The Other Side: Session Two @ Loyola College. This event is free for Loyola students, and $10.00 for the rest of us (smile).
-5/3/08 Joe Squared Pizza & Bar (www.myspace.com/joesqaredpizzabar) … yes, I know this one might read funny, but located in the heart of the arts district in Baltimore, Joe offers good food & live music. There is no cover… just come and drink plenty (oh, smile again).
Ok, you know I will give you reminders of the shows, plus more information as I receive it. If you have not already picked up a copy of Salim’s debut release, Hip Hop Revisited, travel down to Sound Garden in Fells Point, go see brother Bill at Jazz West on Liberty Road, or click on one of the links below to order on line.
Until the next time (I bet you thought I was joking), THANK YOU for your ongoing love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to help us spread the word!
01.09.8 YES WE CAN!
It is 67 degrees in JANUARY, so it MUST be HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
Happy Wednesday to each of you J. Since you all had to sift thru Salim’s novel during the last humpin’, I will try to keep this message short and sweetJ. Before I go any further, THANK YOU Salim for stepping in last week…. Although I needed cliff notes to rummage through the email, it was certainly heartfelt and appreciated (lol). I would also be remiss if I did not thank the Rakim contingency who joined the MOVEMENT on 12/28—I know Salim thanked you, but we can never say welcome to our home enough times.
Ok, pleasantries aside, HAPPY NEW YEAR! At the beginning of each year, I list my goals (both personal and professional), and think of tangible ways to achieve those goals. Being the manager of an incredible band has reminded me that our success is very much dependent on the support of others. While watching Barack Obama last evening, the title of this email became very clear—YES WE CAN. Barack reminded the crowd assembled that the journey to change is a difficult one, but with the support of conscious and engaged participants, anything is possible. I don’t share this reflection to endorse Barack, rather I offer it to underscore the importance of believing in, and thusly supporting independent (and good) MUSIC. If that seems like a stretch, I beg to differ. As consumers, we have the right to listen to GOOD MUSIC—we don’t have to wait for someone else to endorse what we already know is special. I say YES WE CAN have good lyrics & great music get mainstream radio play. I say YES WE CAN have national/international publications (not to mention local) help us spread the word that THE REAL HIP HOP IS OVER HERE. I say YES WE CAN… with YOUJ
Speaking of supporting GOOD MUSIC (you knew it was leading some place), and in case you wondered, the band’s next performance will be on 2/16 at the New Turntable Club. As a part of their Seen-n-Heard series, the band will be showcased with signed and unsigned artists alike. Talk about supporting independent music, huh? J
Alright good people (and yes, off of my soapbox) THANK YOU for your ongoing love and support of GOOD MUSIC. Please continue to help us spread the word!
01.03.08 Yours Truly, Salim
It’s Wednesday Ya’ll, & the beginning of a new year…YEAH!!!!
I asked Natashia if I could sit in her Hump Day chair today and talk to you to start the year off. Notice, I didn’t tell you she said yes. so, if this email ends abruptly…well, you know what happened. If you need a visual, think Eddie Murphy and Della Reese in Harlem Nights. Now before I go too far, I want to thank and welcome all of you who joined the Wednesday Hump Day Extravaganza at the Rakim show. The band and I really appreciated your support and love throughout the show. Thanks for rocking with us through Paper Thin and shouting S.A. to the L.I.M. Hey, that rhymed! How good am I that I do this stuff unconsciouslyJ? Seriously, though, thank you and welcome aboard, we’re glad to have you.
Ok, I know some of you may be thinking, “Ok Salim, why did you accost our incredibly talented Hump Day Host?” That’s a good question and one I will not answer because this is my email AND I HAVE THE POWER!! Sorry, I just finished watching a He-Man rerun and I guess some of his ego rubbed off on me. Anyway, during the last Humpin’ Natashia did a recap of 2007 for the band. She also thanked all of you for your support, but I want to add a few more folks to the list. There are so many people who have helped move the machine forward and allowed us to bring you, what we believe to be, a quality product—I got that Blue Magic baby, lol (uhm, that’s a reference to American Gangster in case you haven’t seen it). I know there isn’t enough room to thank everyone, so if your name does not appear, please blame it on lack of space or a fuddled mind, but not the heart.
Thank you, in no particular order, to Maggie Walsh of W3 Promotions, Amy Deputy, James Collins, J.J., Ryan Greene, Derrick Hamlin, Fleesie Hubbard, Ayesha Gallion, Justice Carter, Felicia & Taavon Rose, Kimberly Wiggins, Head-Roc, Kevin Gift (Wendel Patrick), The New Turntable Club, Club Sonar, The Music Lovers (yes, your boy Topix, Sin*seer, and J. Brown), DJ Static & O Dog (for playing our music north of the border and for introducing us to so many great people), and thanks to everybody behind the scenes that makes this thing run. You can get contact info, or just find out more about these folks and others at www.salimmusic.com and www.myspace.com/salimmusic. I may not be able to put all of your names in this single email, but know that you are appreciated for your efforts.
I wanted to leave the final paragraph for two really special people. First, the fans (yes, you are a people!). What can I say that we haven’t already said? Thank you to everyone on this list for loving music enough to listen. There are hundreds of people on this list that met us when we were opening for someone else. Translation, you were not there to see us. However, you gave the music a chance. We didn’t have a billboard sign, a radio spot, or a video on MTV (ok, I know MTV doesn’t play videos anymore, but you get the idea). All we had was love for the music and because of you I now know that is enough.
Finally, I want to thank my manager/wife/business partner/part-time comic/journalist/best friend/comic, oh, I put that there already. She has done a wonderful job of bringing you into our music family and communicating this beautiful journey to you. I am thankful that she is Salim & The Music Lovers’ ambassador. She has a love for music, fans, and this wonderful art form of hip-hop in particular, that jumps from the pages every Wednesday.
I know this is a long email—I’m surprised she hasn’t found me yet—so I’ll end it with this. I remember when everyone thought Eric B. was Rakim and vice-versa. I remember walking through high school telling everyone that Eric B. was nice as sh$#, lol. Now, a little more than 20 years later we know him as the legend Rakim. Why am I telling you this? Everyone starts somewhere. Everyone has had to pay their dues and blaze their own trails. You are a huge part of the trail that we are trying to blaze. I’m not saying I will be a legend in 20 years, but if the music I have made is thought of 20 years from now, count yourself among the people that made it possible. Thank you.
Peace,
Salim
12.26.07 A YEAR IN REVIEW
It’s Wednesday, so HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
I hope everyone is enjoying this holiday seasonJ. I don’t know about you, but I am still stuffed from celebrating yesterday with family and friends—I guess I will start watching calories NEXT month (lol).
Ok, so you know the band is opening in just two days for my favorite emcee (yes, number two on my all time greats list, but one in my heart), Rakim. Club Sonar will play host, and the doors open at 9 p.m. We expect to see you thereJ.
Speaking of favorite emcees, thanks to everyone who logged in to the message board to compile their top five greatest emcees (remember, not favorite, best). The conversation has been heating up with Poetic Influence reminding us that we ultimately control how Hip Hop is portrayed. He encouraged us to be good messengers and share the MUSIC we know with today’s generation. He also suggests that if people really listed the best emcees, and not their best friends, the lists would be different (ouch!). Well, I say Amen Mr. Influence… I personally invite the rest of you to join the cypha at http://salimmusic.proboards100.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=hiphop&thread=1198044505&page=1
We promise to treat all thoughts with love and respectJ.
Since we are on the topic of love, I thought I would share a little in the form of reflecting on year 2007. Whether you joined the Music Lovers’ train in January, or last month, because of you, we were able to achieve many of our goals. Below are a few highlights from this year:
- In January, we kicked off the year by performing with Baltimore’s own & very talented Fertile Ground. This was especially rewarding because ‘Big Game’ James Collins mastered Hip Hop Revisited.
- April ushered in the previously mentioned Hip Hop Revisited—the 4/28 CD release party was BA-NAN-NASJ
- July found us at the festival formerly known as AFRAM (smile). We were happy to be on the bill with The Pharcyde.
- July was definitely hot, because the band also performed at Art Scape and opened for Talib Kweli.
- On November 10th, the band and Wendel Patrick shared an EXPERIENCE On The Other Side—session two will find a home on Loyola’s campus in March.
- And for December, we will open for Rakim on 12/28 AND Hip Hop Revisited was named one of Baltimore’s top ten releases for 07’ by the good folks at Any Given Tuesday! Check out the list in it’s entirety at http://www.anygiventuesday.info/.
Wow… that was a lot, right? The best part is that is only a fraction of the good news, but I wanted to give you a glimpse into what we (yeah, that means YOU) have been able to accomplish in one calendar year.
So for our last humpin’ of the year, and until we meet again (in two daysJ), THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC… please continue to help us spread the word!!
12.19.07 Lyrics of Fury...Who is in YOUR top five?
It’s Wednesday, so HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
You know I hope you are all doing well and surviving the sometimes fast pace of the holiday seasonJ
Speaking of holiday season (smile), you still have time to cash in on a great deal—purchase Salim’s debut CD, Hip Hop Revisited, from www.salimmusic.com by 1/2/08 and receive three exclusive downloads from the upcoming Music Lovers’ Live CD… talk about a wonderful stocking stuffer?
Ok, so as you know, the band (plus Wendel Patrick) will open for Rakim on 12/28 at Club Sonar (yes, you can still get tickets, but hurry!). Since I found out about that gig, I have been so excited—excited in large part because I believe Ra is one of the greatest emcees. This thought led me to a conversation with Salim about who was in his top five of greatest emcees (hold on, I hope I am not about to start something-lol). Well, his answer, along with the answers for all the members of the band (plus Wendel and me-J) are on Salim’s message board. Just go to
forum and weigh in!
, and you can instantly join our discussion (oops, I mean debate). Remember, greatest emcees—so consider the total package. If you mention someone who is not signed or well known, please include their myspace or website address so the rest of us can check them out. I look forward to your answers ( hint hint Barrett & CurtisJ).
Alright good people… until the next time, THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC. Please continue to help us spread the word!
12.12.07 I Ain't No Joke
Happy Early Hump Day Ya’ll!!
Those of you who know me understand that morning time is not my friend, but Rakim + Salim & The Music Lovers+ Wendel Patrick have me inspiredJ.
Before I go any further, I must welcome all those who came on board via Head-Roc’s festive home on Saturday… we promise to take great care of youJ.
Ok, so we speak often of supporting good music— on 12/28, at Club Sonar in Baltimore, we will be able to do just that. Coming to the stage is arguably one of the best emcees… ever. How often do we get to see a living legend? In that spirit, this show really ain’t a joke—from young B-boys & B-girls to Ol’ School Heads (yeah, I am in the latter category) HIP HOP demands you treat yourself to a piece of history. I am doing ticket runs tomorrow and Saturday—I hope to re-up with the promoter this weekend for more tickets, but there is no guarantee, so call me soon to get your pass to a great way to end 07’.
Speaking of the end of the year (yes!), remember to get your copy of Salim’s debut release, Hip Hop Revisited at www.salimmusic.com . When you order (until 1/2/08), you will receive three exclusive downloads with your purchase. Talking about treats, I can’t think of a better oneJ.
Alright good people… until we meet again, THANK YOU for your ongoing love and support of GOOD MUSIC. Please continue to help us spread the word!
12.5.07 Microphone Fiend
It’s Wednesday, so HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
Wherever this email reaches you, I hope it finds you doing well. I am fully enjoying the first snowfall of the winter season in Baltimore :).
Speaking of the winter season, beginning today, and ending at 11:59 p.m. on January 2nd (wow), when you purchase Salim’s debut release, Hip Hop Revisited, on www.salimmusic.com, you will receive three exclusive downloads from the upcoming Music Lovers’ Live CD!! Although I stopped believing Santa would come down a chimney in the month of December, I still believe in the spirit of family, food, and sharing during the holiday season, so what better gift to give to people addicted to MUSIC than a dope dose of HIP HOP?
Since I mentioned fiends (YES!), the supreme one will be in Baltimore on 12/28 at Club Sonar. Tickets are only $15.00 and are going quickly, so call me to get yours delivered. In case I failed to mention it during our last Humpin’, Rakim is my favorite emcee, so I (oops, I mean weJ) are excited and humbled to have the opportunity to open for the 18th letter man :).
Alright good people, until we meet again, THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC… please continue to help us spread the word!
11.27.07 Thinking of a Masterplan
It’s Wednesday, so HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!
It is a beautiful day, right? You know I hope this message finds each of you doing well. I also hope everyone enjoyed good food, family, and perhaps a few days off for the Thanksgiving holiday :).
Ok, since the last few emails have been jammed pack, I will only keep you reading for a little while todayJ. Yesterday, the band (plus Wendel Patrick, of course) was booked to open for legendary Hip Hop emcee, Rakim on 12/28 at Club Sonar. After I finished screaming, I promised the promoter, Steve, that we would give a great show & sell lots of tickets. The band can handle the music part of this promise… we need your help with selling a lot of tickets (smile). With that being said, tickets are only $15.00 and we will deliver. I am certain tickets will go fast, so hit me up soon to reserve yours. If you need more information, call me, or go to SonartBaltimore.com.
Alright good people (I told you it would be short)… until the next time, THANK YOU for your ongoing love & support of GOOD MUSIC. Please continue to help us spread the word!
11.21.07 The Real Hip Hop
Yes, I know it is nighttime, but it’s still HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
Was I wrong yet again for that intro? Remember, writer’s get that whole creative license thingJ. Alright, so I hope you are all doing well and ready to stuff yourselves tomorrowJ.
As you know, the band and Wendel Patrick performed last Saturday for Amnesty International’s Mid-Atlantic Conference (whew.. again!).. thanks to everyone who listened and showed us lots of love… we promise to keep showing that appreciation by creating good musicJ
Also in the news last week, the on line version of XLR8R magazine featured the famed My CD Has A Scratch 2 on their website. If you go to http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2007/11/my-cd-has-scratch-ii-feat-salim you can get the song as a free download. While you are there, be sure to vote for the song (10 out of 10 in case you need help) so the folks at XLR8R know how much we all love a good lyricist over a dope beat J. If you missed the duo performing this song live a few weeks ago, Mr. You Tube can still help you out at http://youtube.com/watch?v=_dypOdmVc_c.
Speaking of lyrics and dope beats (smile), Salim added a new song on his MySpace page today. Aptly entitled The Real Hip Hop, Salim talks about his love for HIP HOP. When you get a chance, check it out at www.myspace.com/salimmusic., and let us know what you think. We recognize some of the lyrics may make people uncomfortable, but music is supposed to spark conversations, so we look forward to your feedback. Shout out to Topix for lending his vocals at the end of the track (not really-lol).
Ok good people… enjoy your turkey day, and until the next time, THANK YOU for your ongoing love and support of GOOD MUSIC!! Please continue to help us spread the word!
11.14.07 Session ONe
As always, I hope this message finds each of you doing wellJ. Before I go any further, I must say WELCOME to all the new folks who joined the MOVEMENT on THE OTHER SIDE. I extend special greetings to the fans who packed Turntable (Loyola was definitely in the house!) …thank you for listening and supporting us.
Now, I would be remiss if my love did not include Missy from the Carter crew. She played barmaid, cleaned up, checked on the sound, and let me borrow her cash box (smile)… thanks, Missy!
For those of you who did not make it to Session One (boo-hiss), as promised, you missed an EXPERIENCE. If you don’t believe me, check out http://youtube.com/watch?v=_dypOdmVc_c. This is a You Tube clip courtesy of the mad scientist (aka Wendel Patrick)J. After viewing the clip, I am hopeful that you will anxiously await Session Two (coming soon).
Speaking of coming soon (wow), Salim and The Music Lovers + Wendel Patrick will perform this Saturday, 11/17 as a part of this year’s Amnesty International Mid Atlantic Conference in Baltimore (what a mouth full.. wow). As many of you know, Amnesty seeks to provide a space and place where every person enjoys all the Human Rights afforded to them via The Declaration of Human Rights. We are happy to be included in the voice of MUSICIANS that make up the Baltimore/DC ARTS scene. The event is opened to AI’s members only, but please send us good wishes for a great showJ. To learn more about Amnesty International, go to The Amnesty Site.
Alright good people, that is all for now… if you took pictures at the show, please email them to me. Until the next time, THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC. Please continue to help us spread the word!

Hip Hop, Jazz and Electronica Music Meet on THE OTHER SIDE
Salim & The Music Lovers and Producer Wendel Patrick
Already rated in heavy rotation on college radio throughout North America, including the giant WEFUNK in Canada, Salim & The Music Lovers – those who brought us Hip Hop Revisted – are expanding their horizons with a collaboration that will include jazz and electronica music.
This Saturday, November 10, at 8 p.m.. hip-hop fiends, Herbie Hancock aficionados, and music lovers in general can unite at The New Turntable Club for an odyssey with Salim & The Music Lovers and Wendel Patrick.
Producer Wendel Patrick, lauded by industry media such as RE:UP, XLR8R, and URB magazines, and Salim & The Music Lovers will collaborate at the New Turntable Club in Baltimore on 11/10. SĒN Baltimore Magazine has hailed Wendel Patrick as an artist who creates a musical plateau where “jazz fans, techno lovers, and hip hop heads can come together and celebrate."
THE OTHER SIDE is a series that combines hip hop, electronica and cutting edge jazz that will take you on a fantastic voyage sure to please discriminating tastes throughout the Baltimore and D.C. areas.
Salim & The Music Lovers have been compared to The Roots, Common, and A Tribe Called Quest. Blazing a trail that is both scattered with the raw, organic vestiges of early hip-hop culture, the group has reawakened the trend of blending live instrumentation and intelligent lyrics.
Genre crossing pianist Kevin Gift’s alter ego Wendel Patrick has been compared in the national media to artists such as Squarepusher, DJ Shadow and LTJ Bukem.
What: THE OTHER SIDE featuring Salim & The Music Lovers and Wendel Patrick
Where: The New Turntable Club; 2139 Jefferson Street; Baltimore, MD 21205;
When: Saturday, November 10, 2007 @ 8 p.m.
Cost: $10, adv/$13 door
ABOUT THE OTHER SIDE
The Other Side was conceived by Salim and Wendel Patrick to provide music lovers with a visceral music experience. The Other Side presents music the way it was meant to be heard….without additives and preservatives. “We don’t just do music, we are music and there is a symbiotic relationship between artist and fan. That relationship is being neglected by the music industry.(Salim)”
ABOUT SALIM & THE MUSIC LOVERS
Salim & The Music Lovers have been featured at the African American Heritage Festival, ArtScape, Club Sonar and other venues throughout the Baltimore/D.C. areas. Led by Salim, whose objective is to "Bring balance back to hip hop," the group infuses live instruments into their recordings and performances.
ABOUT WENDEL PATRICK
Wendel Patrick is the “righteous alias” of jazz and classical pianist Kevin Gift. His beat-driven debut album “Sound:” has received widespread critical acclaim from both the hip-hop and electronic music communities. In the words of RE:UP Magazine, “Gift is no one trick pony. Keep your eyes and ears on this one”.
10.31.07 What's On the Other Side?
Happy Hump Day Ya’ll!!!
And it is a beautiful day, right? Before I go any further, I must say thanks to the Organic Soul family. Salim stopped by last evening for some quick promotion for the 11/10 show and Olu and the crowd gave lots of love. Salim rocked one of his new songs as a prelude to THE OTHER SIDE—judging from the crowd’s response, we are all in for a treatJ.
Speaking of The Other Side, opening night of this series will begin on November 10th at the New Turntable Club in Baltimore. Tickets are $10 in advance/$13 at the door. All members of the street team will be out and delivering tickets this week. If you missed us last night at OST or Sonar, we will be in full effect at Morgan State for tomorrow’s Communicating Alternative Hip Hop and Politics event. Please call me at the number below to arrange a time for the exchangeJ.
In the rare case that some of you are still without Salim’s debut release, Hip Hop Revisited, you can purchase it locally at all Record and Tape Traders and Sound Garden. Of course you cop it on line thru the links below—either way, pick it up soon so you can look politically chick ON THE OTHER SIDE next Saturday.
Until next time, THANK YOU for your ongoing love and support of GOOD MUSIC. Please continue to help us spread the word!
10.24.07 The Other Side: Session 1
It’s Wednesday, so HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!
I hope everyone survived the much needed rain from today :). Before I go any further, I have to thank all the good folks that came out to The New Turntable Club last Wednesday. The energy and genuine enthusiasm for HIP HOP was infectious.
Per the attached flyers, Salim & The Music Lovers and Wendel Patrick are mixing ingredients for you to have an EXPERIENCE at The New Turntable Club in Baltimore on 11/10. As I mentioned in our last message, this show will be the first in a planned series of shows—it will be a must see, so get your tickets ($10 in advance/$13 at the door) earlyJ.
Speaking of things you must do (smile), please check out www.urpradio.podomatic.com when you get a moment. Early this morning (1:30 a.m. to be exact), Salim interviewed with DJ Sage and O-Dog of Canada’s Hip Hop finest show, The Urban Renewal Project. Salim talked about everything from the journey of making Hip Hop Revisited to his opinion of the current state of Hip Hop. If you want to hear good music and participate in great conversations, check out this duo/station that continues to support independent music. Salim’s podcast is live now, so check it out and let us know what you think.
Until the next time, THANK YOU for your ongoing love and support of GOOD MUSIC! Please continue to help us spread the word.
10.17.07 November 10th Show
Yes, it’s Wednesday, so HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!-
I know, I know… I am finally back after a two week break. Everyone needs a vacation, right? While I was away, I saw a great HIP HOP show—for that, I want to publicly thank Common and Q-TipJ.
Now on to business, tonight, the band will perform at The New Turntable Club (2139 Jefferson Street) as apart of the Mic Life series. The doors will open at 9 p.m., and the band will go on @ 10:30. I know the venue has changed, but this spot will have lots of love courtesy of the Carter family, and the music will still be greatJ. Remember, 50% of all CD and T-shirt sales will be donated to Oprah’s Hurricane Katrina fund. This event is FREE, so we look forward to seeing you tonight.
As for November 10th—please mark that date in red (or black, as it were) on your calendars. The New Turntable Club has agreed to play host to the first show in a series aptly entitled, The Other Side Session 1. Salim & The Music Lovers and Wendel Patrick will perform their first full length show together—not as an opening act, but their show. We will have tickets available tonight ($10.00 in advance/$13.00 at the door)—get them now… this will be an EXPERIENCE you don’t want to miss.
Until the next time (tonight, we hopeJ), THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC!!
9.27.07 Push up ya LIGHTA!!
I know it’s Thursday, but I really can explain. A family situation had me up all night, and some of this morning, but thankfully, all is well and I am back on the jobJ
Speaking of jobs, I believe it is our duty to give back as many times and in as many ways as possible. That being said, Salim will donate 50% of the proceeds from all CD and t-shirt sales to Oprah’s Hurricane Katrina fund, when the band performs on 10/17 at The Brass Monkey. Please save that date, and come out and help us support others.
Back to the topic of jobs (smile), I believe it is well within our Hip Hop duty to be front and center when Common and Q-Tip come to Club Sonar next Wednesday, 11/3. I only have a few tickets left—they are still $34.00 and Salim and I will deliver them to you Saturday. Tickets will be sold on a first come/first served basis, so just say HIP HOP and I will find youJ
And for the final job of the day (I am having way too much fun with this), please mark 11/10 (in red) on your calendars. That night, at a club the City Paper named BEST place to hear Hip Hop (The New Turntable Club), Salim & The Music Lovers AND Wendel Patrick will share an EXPERIENCE with you. As most of you know, the Band and Wendel have been linked for some time now, but this is the first time that they are not opening for someone else—this show will be the collective vision, time, energy, love, and passion of the Music Lovers and Wendel Patrick. The New Turntable Club will play host to the first performance in a planned series of shows—be sure to jump on at the beginning—we plan to take this series all over the map.
Alright good people…. I believe all those dates are well worth Pushin’ Your Lightas Up, right? Until we meet again, THANK YOU for your ongoing love and support of GOOD MUSIC!!
09.19.07 Save the Dates
I know I am cutting it close, but HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!-
I have been running non stop all day, but I am never too busy to send a little love your way (did that rhyme?)J
Before I go any further, I must say WELCOME to the new folks who joined the MOVEMENT at the Flawless Festival last Saturday. Thank you for being open, and listening to the message. We promise to take good care of you hereJ.
Speaking of Flawless, I would be remiss if I did not give them a huge shout out for putting together their 4th annual festival. These brothers had corporate support, family all around, and gave a portion of the proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club… now that is what I call COMMUNITY.
Ok, so I asked you to save the dates. The first date is a night that HIP HOP won’t soon forget. On October 3rd, Common AND Q-Tip will grace Club Sonar (and us). Tickets are $34.00 and going quickly. You know we have some, so get them early and beat the Ticketmaster chargesJ.
October 17th is the next date the band will perform. In the spirit of giving back, the band will donate 50% of all CD and t-shirt sales to Oprah’s Hurricane Katrina fund when they are featured during Mic Life at the Brass Monkey. We all know that the work is far from over in New Orleans, and Lady O is one of the few we trust to get the people who need the money/resources the most what they are due. Admission is FREE, so please consider coming out to help us support others.
Alright good people, until we meet again, THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC!!
09.12.07 Say Something
Happy Hump Day, Ya’ll!!-
I had every intention on sending this much earlier, but my Internet provider had other things in mindJ.
Ok, so we appreciate all the wonderful feedback from those of you who heard Wendel Patrick and Salim on Towson’s WTMD Monday. We are all hoping it was just the first of many LIVE in studio performances for the duo.
So the subject line encourages us to SAY SOMETHING. With the theme of Promoting Non-Violence in Our Communities and Families, Chuck Brown will headline the Fourth Annual Flawless Festival in just three days. All performers will have an opportunity to not only say something, but do something… the particulars are as follows:
When: Saturday, September 15th
Where: 273 Hilltop Lane Annapolis, Maryland
Time: 12-6 p.m.
Loot: $20.00 (14 and under FREE)
Why: To support the newly founded Boys and Girls Club of Annapolis
Alright good people, if you want to go, hit me up and I will take care of youJ. There will be no tickets sold on the day of the show, so hurry if you want to come!!
Until the next time, THANK YOU for your on going LOVE and support of GOOD MUSIC!
09.08.07 Hump Day - The Late Edition
I know it is Friday, but I can explain.
Salim and I just returned from NYC, and I didn’t have access to my Outlook account. Long story short, I missed you, and sorry I kept you waiting :).
Ok, so down to the business. The band will perform next Saturday, September 15th at the Flawless Festival in Annapolis. Salim and The Music Lovers will be one of six bands performing for the 4th annual festival that promotes non-violence in our families and communities. The honorable Chuck Brown will headline the day which begins at noon, and ends at 6:00 p.m. I have tickets for those interested in going (and you won’t get the surcharge from Ticketmaster). Kudos to the brothers in Flawless for putting together such a great event!
I have more good news (and the crowd screams YEAH)!! Several radio stations are catching on and beginning to play songs from Salim’s debut release, Hip Hop Revisited. Up first is Professor Groove and DJ Static of WEFUNK radio in Montreal, Canada. Receiving the Stylus DJ award for the Best College Radio Station of the Year, WEFUNK has been streaming good Funk and Hip Hop since 1996. Each week, the crew has a play list of 30 songs, plus they add an additional four newcomers each week. Untitled was added three weeks ago, and since that time has moved from being an add on, to number 21, and this past week coming in at number 11!! We want to shout out the station for providing a great format and place to hear music. Please check them out at www.wefunkradio.com every Friday midnight -2 a.m. and request Salim :)
As if that were not enough, Virginia State University’s 91.3 graciously held a listening party for five songs from Hip Hop Revisited! The DJ saw The Music Lovers when they opened for Talib Kweli in July, and promised to put the CD in rotation. True to his word, a week ago today, he introduced Virginians (and some other people too) to the sounds of Salim. You can check out the very best of ol’ school Hip Hop and R&B every Friday night from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. at www.vsu.edu .
And just to really put the proverbial cherry on top, Wendel Patrick (www.myspace.com/wendelpatrick) invited Salim to Towson’s radio set, Baltimore Unsigned, last week to do an interview and two songs from Wendel’s debut release, Sound. You can listen to these two talented musicians answer thought provoking questions from host and Sun reporter, Sam Sessa, and perform live in the studio this coming Monday, September 10th at 8 p.m. on 89.7 Fm WTMD.
Whew!! Guess I had a lot to share, huh? Until we meet again, THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC!!!
08.29.07 We R FA-MA-LEE :)
It’s Wednesday, so Happy Hump Day Ya’ll!!-
What’s going on good people? I hope all is well in your respective worldsJ Before I go any further, WELCOME to all the new folks that joined the MOVEMENT at the Baltimore Music Conference last Thursday. We promise to take good care of youJ.
Ok, speaking of the Baltimore Music Conference, THANKS to everyone who devoted their time, passion, and energy to the festival. Thanks especially to Lisa Suit, founder and organizer, of the four day festival. Lisa, I publicly volunteer to assist in any way I can for next year. If I forget to remember this, simply print the emailJ.
Alright, as the title suggests, we are indeed family. One of the many functions of family, is to lend and offer support—often times when no one else can or will. With that in mind, and in an effort to make more people aware of Salim and his music, we ask that you do a few things:
-Go to Salim’s myspace page (www.myspace.com/salimmusic). On that page, there is a direct link to both Cdbaby, and i-Tunes. Both sites are looking for reviews of Hip Hop Revisited. The more reviews and traffic a site receives, the more opportunities the music will have to reach the masses.
-Go to www.citypaper.com/bob/ and vote for Salim & The Music Lovers in all areas you deem appropriate. The City Paper is taking votes for their annual Best of Baltimore paper. Like so many other media outlets, they need to see a steady stream of people talking, asking, and demanding (in some cases) certain sounds and stories. As family members, I believe we should be honored to give them what they are askingJ. You must vote by 8/31 for your vote to count!!
I hope that wasn’t too much… sometimes family members ask too much (you guys better not be agreeing!)! In all seriousness, there is no reason for Salim to be Baltimore’s best kept secret… we need you to help us spread the word and the love!!
Speaking of what we do for family (smile), we are happy to join Green Tea on stage for a live recording this Friday at the Artmosphere Café in Mount Ranier, Maryland. As many of you know, Green Tea is featured on a few songs on Hip Hop Revisited. For more information, please check her page at www.myspace.com/greenteasoul.
I am off to Towson’s radio station… Wendel Patrick (www.myspace.com/wendelpatrick) has invited Salim to join him for a jam session at the radio station. They plan to do two songs from Wendel’s debut release, Sound. Talk about family, huh?
Until we meet again, THANK YOU for your on going LOVE and support of GOOD MUSIC!!!
08.22.07 BMC @ Club One
Yes, it’s really HUMP DAY YA’LL!!—
What’s going on good people? I know I hit you with a 48 hours preview of our regular time together, but my hope is that you don’t mind humpin’ twice a weekJ.
Before I go any further, I must say WELCOME to all the new folks who joined the MOVEMENT thru cyberspace when they purchased Hip Hop Revisited. We thank you and happily open our space to youJ.
On to the business—tomorrow evening, Salim & The Music Lovers (and Wendel Patrick) will help kick off the Baltimore Music Conference (www.bmcon.org). Club One (Earth Level) will play host for the inaugural night. The band will take the stage at 9:50 for a 40 minute set. Tickets are only $10.00, so call me soon if you plan on going. Salim and I are doing ticket runs today, and tomorrow.
I would be remiss if I didn’t take a little time to say thank you to Lisa Suit, founder and organizer for the conference. She and her partners at SEN Baltimore (www.myspace.com/senbaltimore) and Any Given Tuesday (www.anygiventuesday.info) have committed themselves to supporting and promoting ART from all genres in and around Baltimore. If you have some time this weekend, come out and enjoy all the talent that YOUR CITY produces.
Alright folks, as always, please help spread the word, and THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC!!
08.08.07 Mark Your Calendars!!!
Athough I am about to go out of town (literally), I had to pause long enough to say HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!-
Was I wrong for that long intro.? You know how I get about the whole creative license thingJ Anyway, WELCOME to all the folks that jumped on board at last Saturday’s taping of the I Used to Love Her DVD at Morgan State University. We appreciated the good energy you walked in the door with. Now for the business—the band will make its next appearance as a part of the Baltimore Music Conference. The details are below:
What: The Baltimore Music Conference
When: Thursday, August 23, 2007
Time: 9:30 (for a 40 minute set!!)
Why: TO CELEBRATE MUSIC
Ok good people, we still don’t have confirmation about the location, but trust we will make wherever we are feel like homeJ.To find out more information about the conference, or to get tickets on line, check out www.bmcon.org and www.myspace.com/bmoremusic.
Until next time, THANK YOU for your ongoing love and support of GOOD MUSIC.
08.01.07 August Got Next
Ok, I know I’m cutting it close, but give me a break… Happy Hump Day Ya’ll!!!
Yes, it’s still Hump Day even when it’s late at night—or is that especially when it’s late at nightJ? Ok, so I would be remiss if I didn’t welcome all of our new members who rocked out with us on Friday at the Talib Kweli concert. It was truly an experience. We’re thankful that you decided to become a part of the MOVEMENT.
So, what’s up next? Well, there are some really wonderful events that we are fortunate to be a part of. First, Salim will be on a panel this Saturday at Morgan State. The panel will discuss how the commercialization of rap has contributed to break downs in black culture. The discussion is part of a book/DVD that Ryan C. Greene, author and radio talk show host, is publishing. Here is the math—I felt really cool typing thatJ:
Saturday, August 4th
10:00am-1:30pm
Morgan State University
New Student Center Theatre
1700 E. Cold Spring Lane
Baltimore, Md. 21215
There are two panels and Salim will be on the second panel, taking place from 12:00pm-1:30pm. You can attend this event FREE as a guest of Salim’s if you RSVP me by Friday at 12:00pm. If you don’t RSVP, but still want to attend, you can-- it will just cost you $5. You can get more information from Ryan’s page at www.ryancgreene.com.
Next, we have the Baltimore Music Conference. This is a music festival/conference that helps shine a light on the many talented artists from the Baltimore/DC/VA area by bringing them together with fans and industry insiders. Did that sound magazineish? Ok, I must be getting sleepy because I’m making up words. Anyway, this is a really cool festival because it brings together bands, artists, DJ’s, etc…from all genres of music. Salim will be performing on Thursday, August 23rd, which is the kick-off night. I’ll be able to give you more details next week so stay tuned.
Last, but not least…Salim is now on ITUNES!!!! We are giving it to you every possible way. You can now go on Itunes and download the entire album or a couple of songs. Ok, for the new folks, Salim neglected to mention on Friday that you can purchase the album from several local stores. I’ve chided him for it and he is quite sorry for his mistake (what can I say, he’s an artist). You can purchase the album from the following places:
Record & Tape Traders
Sound Garden
Jazz West

As always, help us spread the word, and THANK YOU for your on going love and support of GOOD MUSIC.
07.12.07 Hotter Than July
I know it’s Round About Midnight (ah, who is that?), but Happy Hump Day Ya’ll!!
I hope everyone is well?. This email will be jammed packed, so let’s commence with the business. First, THANKS for all the love and support we got at the Festival formerly known as AFRAM?. We appreciate all the new folks who joined the MOVEMENT, and promise to provide a nurturing home for MUSIC.
As festivals go, Artscape would have to be my favorite—as blessings would only have it, we are performing there this year (yeah!!). Thanks to the hard work and vision of a few hard working men (big ups to BLEEK), the Brass have decided to add an additional tent that plays host to musicians of all genres. Aptly named Studio Sessions Live, Salim & The Music Lovers (you guessed it, along with special guest Wendel Patrick?) and other talented artists will perform in 20 minute sets 7/20-7/22. Salim and Nem’ are scheduled to perform on 7/21 @ 1:30. For more information, check out (www.blackbookscafe.com/SSLiveatArtscape.htm ).
As if that were not enough, the band recently got booked to open for Talib Kweli at Club Sonar on 7/27/07!!. Tickets are going fast ($20 in adv/$25 at the door), so please contact me if you plan on going.
Alright good people, if you haven’t yet, go pick up a copy of Salim’s debut release, Hip Hop Revisited. You can now purchase the CD on line at www.cdbaby.com, from Salim’s website, at www.salimmusic.com , through Snocap on MySpace at www.myspace.com/salimmusic , or at all Record and Tape Traders, and Sound Garden in Fells Point (Baltimore, that is). Whew… you definitely can’t say we’re not trying to get you some good HIP HOPJ.
As always, help us spread the word, and THANK YOU for your support of GOOD MUSIC.

06.27.07 Salim goes LIVE!
t’s Wednesday, so Happy Hump Day Ya’ll!!-
Yes, I know it’s after 11 p.m., but I had a LONG day! Anyway, I have an update and a reminder for you:
-Hip Hop Revisited is now in all Record & Tape Traders (yeah!). If you go to a location and they don’t have it, please request additional copies. We are trying to schedule an in-store concert with them, but they won’t book us until we prove Salim has a fan base. In case you didn’t get the hint, please go buy the CDJ.
-The band is scheduled to perform at the African American Heritage Festival on Saturday, July 7th at 6:15 for a 25 minute set. Also performing with the band will be the very GIFTED Wendel Patrick (www.myspace.com/wendelpatrick). For more information on the Festival, go to www.aahf.net.
Alright good people… I know that was short and sweet (please stop cheering Sheronda), but I promise to give you more love on our next humpingJ.
As always, thank you for your love and support of GOOD MUSIC!
06.12.07 Salim goes LIVE!
I am back, so you know what that means… It’s Hump Day Ya’ll!!!-
What’s going on good people? Before we get to any business, thank you Salim for stepping in last week while I celebrated my birthday (if you missed it, don’t worry, I celebrate the entire month of JuneJ). Thanks also to all the well wishes I got—the love felt so goodJ.
Speaking of goodness (yes!), brother Salim did an interview Sunday for a website, Any Given Tuesday. If you recognize the name, great-- this is the very same site/host that did the first review of Hip Hop Revisited a few weeks back. At any rate, please go to http://www.senbaltimore.com/podcasts/agt/any-given-tuesday-podcast-3---salem.shtml and check out the interview. Though I might have a biased opinion (no, never!), I have to say the interview sounds sooo good! I thought I was listening to NPR… the actual sound quality is excellent, the topics range from Salim’s thoughts on the current state of hip hop, to his influences in MUSIC. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge and thank the host, Barrett King, and his partners at SEN Baltimore. We should support all venues that love and respect local talent.
Alright good people—please check out the podcast—you can either stream or download it. For those of you who use iTunes, you can download it at via the Podcasts’ store. I hope that read well, because I have no idea what it meansJ.
Until we meet again, THANK YOU for your ongoing love & support of GOOD MUSIC!
06.12.07 Where to find GOOD MUSIC!
Guess What??.. It’s Hump Day Ya’ll!!-
Since today is Natashia’s birthday—everyone collectively say, HAPPY BIRTHDAY NATASHIA—I, Salim, have stepped in as guest writer. I already know that I have very large shoes to fill. You can email me afterwards for grading purposes (I only accept A’s and B’s). Before I continue, I want to WELCOME all the folks that joined the MOVEMENT via MySpace since our last humpin’- we promise to be a clearing house for all good thingsJ.
Speaking of good things, thank you to everyone who has written a review on CDbaby. There are many insightful, heartfelt reviews and I appreciate the feedback. For those of you who haven’t had a chance to write a review, here is the link: http://cdbaby.com/review/salimmusic. The more reviews they see, the better—and in all honesty, it’s just good to hear from all of you.
THANKS to so many of you asking where/how to purchase Hip Hop Revisited. We are trying to provide as many options for you to purchase a CD as possible. For now, you can purchase singles via snowcap on the myspace page, www.myspace.com/salimmusic. You can purchase the entire CD from the music page on our website, www.salimmusic.com, or from CDbaby, http://cdbaby.com/cd/salimmusic. Locally, you can purchase the CD from Brother Bill at Jazz West. His store is located at 6035 Liberty Road Suite 7-lower level.
I wanted to write a lot more since this will probably be the only time Natashia relinquishes control of her love letters to you, but my conscience wouldn’t allow me—ok, actually she’s standing over my shoulder right now glaring at me. I’m grateful for all of the love and support you have shown to us and this project. An album is like a baby. You spend several months nurturing it in your womb, giving it all of the love and attention you can. Then you give birth and send the precious package out into the world. You never know how the world is going to treat it. You only hope that there is a place in this space for your baby to grow. Thank you for providing a fertile ground for my baby…Hip Hop Revisited.
Until the next time…Please keep loving music…it will always love you back.
Peace,
Salim
06.06.07 First Official Review
You know what it is—It’s Hump Day Ya’ll!!-
I hope everyone is doing well. Salim and I jammed last evening at Organic Soul Tuesdays’ inaugural night at Eden’s Lounge in Baltimore. The energy was good and the talent was FABULOUS! Though some of complain about venues and support of the arts in the City, (that would be me), let’s celebrate all that we have in our backyard—not NYC, not Philly, but Baltimore.
Ok, down to business… per our last humping, CDbaby selected Hip Hop Revisited as one of the Editor’s picks. You can see that by going to http://cdbaby.com/style/62. After you check that part out, please go to http://cdbaby.com/cd/salimmusic and write a review of the CD. Believe it or not, it really helps if the site can see a lot of comments/traffic on the page. Thanks in advance for taking a little time to get this done… for those of you who have already penned a comment, much love J
Alright, as the subject line indicates, Hip Hop Revisited had her first official review this week (not to negate the reviewers on the mailing listJ). At any rate, you can check out the review at http://blawk359.blogspot.com/?. While you are on the site (especially local artists), browse around to see how you can develop a relationship with the hosts- the more we know about GOOD MUSIC, the more we can support it.
Speaking of goodness (smile), as always, THANK YOU for your ongoing love & support of GOOD MUSIC (that may be a run-on, but I am using my creative license).
05.30.07 Hip Hop Revisited Editor's Pick
You know what?? It’s Hump Day Ya’ll!!-
Ok, I admit, it’s Hump Night (which should be a good thing), but I wanted to talk to you guys today. At any rate, while surfing the Net today, I discovered that Salim’s Hip Hop Revisited was one of the editor’s picks on cdbaby!!. Other than the obvious free publicity from this honor, we really appreciate the unbiased love we received from them, so if you know anyone at CDbaby, tell them we said THANK YOU
Now on to business, I shared this wonderful news to keep you informed, and to ask (if you are so inclined) you to go to http://cdbaby.com/review/salimmusic and write a review of the cd/the man/and his music. Especially for those of you who actually have the cd (shouldn’t that be everyone?), I believe it will send a great message to the brass at CDbaby to be inundated with lots of reviews from this new independent (and yes talented) artistJ
Speaking of talented artists, Salim recently spotlighted on a song, My CD Has A Scratch, with a gifted musician, Wendel Patrick (aka Kevin Gift). For those of you who were at the cd release party, you know Wendel Pat’s SOUND (name of his debut release) is unmistakably refreshing. Anyway, Wendel is in this month’s edition of the indie magazine, Urb. As an artist under their Next 1000 series, consumers get to vote on who will receive a feature in the coming months. Since we are voting today, tomorrow, and the next day (get the idea?), please go to http://www.urb.com/promotions/next1000/profile.php?BandId=195 and click on “stars to rate the artist”- this simple act will record a vote for Wendel. Feel free to refresh the page and vote as often as you canJ. Wendel has graciously selected the previously mentioned My CD Has A Scratch as the track to play on Urb’s website, so a vote for Wendel is ultimately a vote for Salim (yeah!!).
05.23.07 Salim to Perform at African Heritage Festival
It’s Hump Day Ya’ll!!!
I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine! I missed you all last week, so I have an extra helping of love to shareJ.
Before I continue, let me mind my manners and say WELCOME to all the folks that joined the MOVEMENT when the train stopped at Club Sonar a few weeks ago… much love and respect for the support given from Groove Stu, Marcel & The Truth, and Scott Stone… you all made it a GREAT night for music.
Alright, down to business… thanks to everyone who purchased Hip Hop Revisited. The feedback has been good (and appreciated), so please, keep letting us know how you feel. For those of you who have asked, you can pick up a copy of Salim’s debut album at Jazz West (6035 Liberty Road Suite 7-lower level) in Baltimore. Tell brother Bill I sent you, and he will take good care of youJ. Also, you will soon be able to go to CDbaby, and Itunes to cop the cd. Until then, you can purchase the cd at www.salimmusic.com, or www.myspace.com/salimmmusic .
Ok good people, you know I will be in touch (smile)—until that time, please mark your calendars for 7/7/07 (what a good date, huh?). The band will perform at this year’s African Heritage Festival at 6 p.m. for a 25 minute set… I will give you more details as I receive them.
As always, THANK YOU for your support of GOOD MUSIC.
04.18.07 Hip Hop Revisited Makes First Stop in Baltimore (DOWNLOADABLE PDF)
April 18 – Salim will hold his CD release and listening party on Saturday, April 28 at The New Turntable Club. A live band performance will top off the night’s festivities. Local favorites Green Tea, Head-Roc, and Wendel Patrick will be showcased as well. Tickets are $8.00 in advance/$12.00 at the door.
Hip Hop Revisited “picks up where the Roots’ Things Fall Apart left off,” said author and radio talk show host Ryan Greene. Salim has indeed built a fan base in the Baltimore/D.C. metropolitan area that is diverse and hungry for a more organic, satisfying dose of hip hop.
His group, Salim & The Music Lovers’, performances within the past two years have included opening up for Slick Rick, Method Man, Fertile Ground, and Black Sheep and at prominent urban venues such as the African-American Heritage Festival (AFRAM).
Representatives from all media outlets are invited to review Hip Hop Revisited and attend the April 28 performance as well. If a representative is unable to make it, a request to review the CD is encouraged.
Visit www.myspace.com/salimmusic to hear music samples, view performance photos, and to see upcoming performance dates. Also read an interview from Frostburg University’s online newspaper.
